I had a very disappointing and unsafe experience at this hotel today(12/12/2025). I ordered food and also bought a water bottle, but the bottle I received looked like it had been used before. The seal didn’t look proper and there was no visible expiry date, which is a serious hygiene concern. When I informed the staff after paying, the person handling the counter — Krishna Moorthy — did not take any responsibility. Instead of acknowledging the issue or offering a replacement, the response was careless and unprofessional. I’m not sure if he is the owner, but this behaviour from staff is unacceptable. Selling a water bottle that appears reused or without an expiry date is a major health risk. Customers expect basic safety and hygiene, and this experience was very disappointing. I am sharing this review so others are aware and so the management can take action to improve their quality control and staff behaviour.
This Mari hotel, supposed to have introduced vadacurry as a side dish for Idly and Dosai, is a simple south indian tiffin center. Closed on Mondays and with a lean guest attendance at 12.30 pm on a Tuesday, I tried their popular set dosai - vadacurry combination costing ₹60/-. Both were good with the soft set dosai and mildly spiced vadacurry. Vadacurry which normally is loaded with strong doses of spices in other places generally keep people away from this delicious dish. It was a very apt accompaniment for the set dosai. regular sambar, coconut chutney and kaara chutney are available. Kaara chutney was tastier witha hint of ginger. They accept only cash payment, not any other mode.
They claim to be the pioneers of vada curry in Chennai—and I was curious to check it out for myself. I ordered set dosa with vada curry, along with pongal and vadai. The highlight was definitely the set dosa with vada curry. The vada curry was rich, flavorful, and had just the right consistency to complement the ser dosas. The blend of spices was aromatic without being overpowering, and every bite was satisfying. The pongal was on the milder side, which I actually appreciated. It had a subtle ghee aroma and a soft texture, perfect for those who prefer a lighter breakfast option. The vadai was crisp on the outside and soft inside—served hot and fresh, just the way it should be. What stood out was the homely feel of the food—it wasn’t overly commercial or greasy. Everything tasted freshly made and balanced. If you’re someone who enjoys traditional South Indian breakfast and happen to be around Saidapet, I’d definitely recommend giving this place a try. Especially if you're curious about the origin story of vada curry, this spot is worth a visit. A simple place with flavors that speak for themselves.
Must try their signature dish - Vadacurry. Flavourful and a must try breakfast spot in Chennai. Vadacurry is best to be paired with idiyappam and Set dosa.
I went there to have their signature vadacurry, along with idli, poori, vada and all. Its not upto hype. But food was quite okay, like a simple old tamil style vegetarian hotel for a quick breakfast. Price is a bit high, can get better veg breakfast at lower prices elsewhere.
