We ordered a rice thali along with mutton kosha, morola macher chochori, macher dimer bora, and aamer chutney. The overall taste was satisfying, and one thing I particularly liked was that the meal did not feel heavy afterwards, which reflects the quality and balance of the cooking. The food quality is good, and the staff behavior is also very pleasant. You may face some rush during lunch hours, which is expected considering its popularity. The price is on the higher side compared to a typical pice hotel in Kolkata, and the quantity served is somewhat less, but with a legacy of more than 70 years, Swadin Bharat Hindu Hotel is certainly worth trying at least once for its heritage and authentic flavors.

This pice hotel is amongst the most popular pice hotels in Kolkata and originally began as the Hindu Hotel, then on the day of India’s independence, it was renamed Swadhin Bharat Hindu Hotel. More than a century old, it has continued to serve authentic Bengali cuisine for generations, becoming both a culinary and historical landmark of Kolkata. What makes this place truly special is the role it played during India’s freedom struggle and Bengal Famine. Many freedom fighters used to dine here in hiding during the British Raj. When raids happened, the owner would bravely confront the British officers at the entrance while secretly leaving the back gate open, giving revolutionaries a chance to escape. Acts like these made the hotel a silent ally of India’s independence movement. Not a lot of people would know about contributions like this. Another unforgettable chapter in its history came during the Great Bengal Famine, when the hotel served free khichdi to hundreds of starving people every single day. Few eateries can claim to have fed both the leaders of the freedom struggle and the masses in their hour of need. The food here is still rooted in tradition simple, light, and reminiscent of home cooked Bengali meals. Fish items like pabda Jhaal, daal, fish egg pakoda, seasonal vegetables, and fried items like jhuri alu bhaja are delicious, and not overly spicy. The staff are warm, courteous, and reflect the same legacy of care. However I felt that the price is a little on the higher side for a pice hotel for the portion they serve. Overall, it's a true history gem in Kolkata.

We ordered rice, chitol muthya, dimer bora, dal, jhinge alu posto diye, desi chicken and parse macher jol. Food was served in banana leaves. This is actually a pice hotel. The food is not too much rich and the chutney at the end was delicious. The food prices has increased since the last time we had food here.

So, after many years of planning, finally we made it to this historical place. Nice, cosy decor. Neat and clean. Food served on banana leaves over a steel plate and water in earthen glasses. We tried bhaat, daal, alu bhaja, machher dim-er bora, chochchori, posto bora, khashir mangsho, chitol macher muitha bora, mango chutney. Food was great, but khashir mangsho needs a special mention (4 pieces per plate). We reached pretty early, around 12:30 p.m., so finding seat was a bit easier. Very neat and clean, budget friendly, home cooked category food. Loved it. Lovely experience as a first timer. Went to gather experience of such hotels, worth trying. Had 3 types of fish curry, mutton and 2 types of fried fish. Very fresh. Actually had more than normal meal out of greediness 😄 Subhash Chandra Bose used to enjoy food of this place, that is why, I guess the Tshirt worn by the waiters have his picture. We have ordered pui saager chochchori, dal, sorso ilish, muithar bora, chingrir malaicurry, mangsher jhol and chatni. We got so engrossed in eating that we forgot to take the picture of chigri and mangsho.
