The Bank of China doesn't issue Indian rupees, so you have to exchange for US dollars first and then exchange them again in India. Upon arriving in Kolkata, the airport exchange counter only offered 57 rupees for 1 US dollar. Since I needed rupees to pay for prepaid taxis, I exchanged only a small amount despite knowing I was losing money. Then I went to Skyway on Saad Street, a popular spot among Chinese tourists, and saw a rate of 68.2 rupees to 1 US dollar! I was happy to exchange several hundred US dollars and planned to exchange some more before leaving Kolkata.
