New Market which is also known as Hogg Market. This market is situated on the side of Lindsay Street at Dharmatala. Previously New Marke was referred to the original enclosed market but at present the entire shopping area along with the market complex is known as New Market. It is famous for its Victorian architecture and vast array of goods from fabrics, sarees, and electronics, food, chocolates, and street snacks, offering a mix of permanent shops and bustling street stalls. This market was one of most oldest and iconic market in Kolkata. It was started in 1874. The market is open Monday to Saturday and only Sunday it is close. The market is generally opens mid-morning (around 10:30 AM – 11 AM) and runs into the evening (till 8-9 PM).The best time for marketing is early in the morning and let evening (to avoid the peak crowds and respect to price).

New Market: New Market, also known as Sir Stuart Hogg Market. Established in 1874 to serve the British, this market is known for its iconic clock tower and red brick facade designed in the Victorian Gothic style. It is a busy shopping landmark located on Lindsay Street in the Esplanade/Dharmatala area of Kolkata and is one of the most iconic and historic shopping destinations in Kolkata in 2026. Although "New Market" originally referred to the main enclosed market, in the local language, the entire shopping area including the market complex is called "New Market". New Market is famous for the saying that you can find "anything from a needle to an elephant" at its 2000+ stalls, offering a unique, budget-friendly and vibrant shopping experience. The area around the main building is a hub of street food and historic eateries. Hours: Generally open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm (Monday-Friday) and 2:30 pm on Saturdays; closed on Sundays.

AVOID. As a tourist who has travelled to large cities around India this is by far the worst experience I have had with markers. We were hounded, followed, pushed around and shouted at. We were completely put off with the whole experience we left very quickly. I would rather spend more money else where, where I am not being shouted at.

The best place in Kolkata for shopping. Here in new market you can purchase trending cloths in reasonable prices. Almost all the brands showrooms are available here. Restaurants here are very ambience friendly and taste is yummy. Rooftops restaurants are very pleasant here. Street shopping is very famous here for price friendly products. Transportation from here is very easy. Almost all the products such as bangles, artificial Jwellery, cloths, toys, jackets, shoes, mobile accessories and street food are easy Available here. One should visit this market if he or she visits Kolkata. Thank you

I’ve always wanted to visit New Market, Kolkata, but unfortunately I didn’t have time during the day. On my last night in the city, before leaving Kolkata, I finally managed to stop by. I was surprised by how lively it was at night! It’s not just one street, but several interconnected streets forming a bustling market area. The whole place was brightly lit and full of energy, with shops selling clothes, accessories, and all kinds of food. It’s really a great place to explore. I didn’t have much time this visit, so I could only take a quick walk. Next time, I’ll definitely plan to spend more time here and truly enjoy New Market. （Dec. 6th, 2025)
