It's a beautiful palace with a rich history and perfect for a visit on weekends. It has some beautiful timeless pieces. The interior is a architecture marvel. There's also a mini zoo which one can visit within the premises

It is a wonderful building, although no pictures are allowed while you are on the premise and inside. It is well worth to go inside the palace for a short guided tour (by donation). Outside, one can stroll through the small private zoo with some beautiful birds and deer.

Marble Palace in North Kolkata is a beautifully preserved nineteenth-century mansion that offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle and artistic patronage of a wealthy Bengali merchant family during the British colonial era. It stands as a unique architectural and cultural landmark, distinguishing itself from typical colonial administrative buildings. Colonial History and Historical Significance Constructed in 1835 by Raja Rajendra Mullick, a wealthy Bengali zamindar (landowner) and art connoisseur, the palace reflects a fascinating synthesis of architectural styles: European Neoclassical grandeur is blended with traditional Bengali elements and even Chinese influences in the verandas and balconies. This deliberate fusion symbolized the Mullick family's economic ascendancy and their engagement with the evolving socio-cultural landscape of British-era Bengal. The palace's primary significance lies in its role as a private art museum of international repute. Raja Rajendra Mullick amassed an extraordinary collection of art from across the world, featuring original paintings by European masters like Rubens and Sir Joshua Reynolds, sculptures (some said to be replicas of Praxiteles to Phidias), antique Victorian furniture, Belgian glassware, and a vast collection of decorative items. The mansion, with its 126 different types of imported marble used for walls and floors, became a testament to his refined taste and the immense wealth commanded by certain Indian merchants who navigated the colonial system to their advantage. Adjacent to the palace, within the premises, is an older Jagannath temple built by Raja Rajendra Mullick's adopted father, Nilmoni Mullick. This temple, however, is accessible only to family members. Visitor Information Timings: The Marble Palace is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It is closed to visitors on Mondays and Thursdays. Ticket: Entry is free, but a prior special permit must be obtained from the West Bengal Tourism Information Bureau at BBD Bag, Kolkata. The palace remains a private residence, and photography is strictly prohibited inside the premises. Nearby Tourist Attractions Jorasanko Thakur Bari: The ancestral house of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, located within a 5-minute walking distance, making it easy to visit both places together. Transportation to Reach the Palace The Marble Palace is located at 46, Muktaram Babu Street in North Kolkata. Metro (Local Rail): The most recommended and efficient way is by metro. The Girish Park Metro Station is the nearest, just a 5-minute walk away from the palace. Local bus, Riksha, Auto are also available to reach the place.

Even though it's private property, the place feels like a world of its own.
