Kalighat Kali Temple is a Hindu temple in Kalighat, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, one of the 10 Mahavidyas in the Hindu tantric tradition and the supreme deity in the Kalikula worship tradition. The temple is one of the 51 Shakti Pithas in India. Kalighat The Kalighat Kali temple in its present form is about 200 years old, although it was referred to in Mansar Bhasan composed in the 15th century, and Kavi Kankan Chandi in the 17th century. Subsequently, it received patronage from some of the major Zamindar families from Bengal, among them the Bawali Raj and the Sabarna Roy Choudhury families being the most prominent. The present structure of the temple was completed under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family in 1809. Santosh Roy Chowdhury, a Kali devotee himself, started the construction of the present-day temple in 1798. It took 11 years to complete the construction. The Roy Chowdhurys' traditional patronage of the deity is disputed.Pilgrims to the site practice a holy dipping event called Snan Yatra in the temple's Kundupukur tank. In 1835 Kashinath Roy built a Nat Mandir in the temple square. In 1843 Vaishnavite Uday Narayan Mondal, a member of the Bawali Raj family, established the present day ShyamRai temple in the Kalighat temple square. In 1858 a Dal Mancha was installed by Madan Gopal Koley for the ShyamRai temple

Kalighat Metro Gate No. 4 is located on Radh Behari Avenue in Kalighat area. This gate of Kalighat metro is mostly used gate. This gate is the easy way towards the lake market, Lake Mall and Tandoor house towards Deshpriya Park. This gate is like other metro station, near and clean.

Neat and clean premises. It's quite crowded asthe location is such that people come to this juncture to travel in different directions. So, sometimes the queues at the ticket counter becomes too long in spite of many counters being open.

Kalighat metro station is located on the blue line of Kolkata metro - Few stations south from Esplanade metro station. CONNECTIVITY AND SURROUNDINGS: Next Stations: Towards Kavi Subhash (southbound): the next is Rabindra Sarobar. Towards Dakshineswar (northbound): next is Jatin Das Park. Nearby landmarks: • Kalighat Kali Temple is close by. • Lake Market area • Rashbehari More area for shopping & roads crossing. GOOD SIDES: 1. Strategic Location & Connectivity: Kalighat is very well placed - near the Kali Temple, Rashbehari Avenue, Gariahat, Deshapriya Park etc. Many people use it for both religious visits and regular commuting. The recent skywalk improves access to the temple and helps manage footfalls during pilgrimage seasons or festivals. 2. High Footfall & Demand: During peaks (e.g. Durga Puja), Kalighat records very high passenger traffic—among the highest of the Blue Line. This means the station is crucial in Kolkata’s metro network. It serves both regular commuters and those traveling for shopping, religious, or cultural reasons. That diversity keeps the station busy but also necessitates good facilities. 3. Recent Improvements & Safety Measures: Guardrails have been installed on the platform edges to reduce suicide attempts. Installation of additional AFC‑PC (Automatic Fare Collection / Passenger Control) gates: three new exit gates added to manage rush, making exit flow from paid zone better. Having fully recharged card helps the most though. 4. Maintenance & Cleanliness: The station is relatively well-maintained, clean, and safer compared to many other older metro stations. BAD PART: 1. Crowding & Rush Management: Because of high footfall, especially during festivals, peak hours, or puja events, the station gets extremely crowded. Platforms, mezzanine floors, gates can become chaotic. Some complaints of people not being able to enter trains during peak times due to crowding. 2. Safety / Incidents Disrupting Service: Water seepage between Jatin Das Park and Kalighat has disrupted services in heavy rains. This kind of vulnerability affects reliability in bad weather. There have been suicide attempts and safety risks on platforms historically. The guardrails are one step, but there is still concern about whether measures are sufficient. 3. Accessibility Issues: Even though a skywalk has been built, there are reports that the access from the metro station end is not fully seamless — stairs are still involved, or lifts/escalators not always available where one would expect them. This can be a problem for elderly / mobility‑challenged people. 4. Operational Snags & Disruptions: Technical snags, signal issues, power blocks due to waterlogging or drainage issues have caused temporary halts. Passengers sometimes face delays without timely announcements. VERDICT: Kalighat Metro Station is one of the more important and busy stations in Kolkata’s network. It does many things right: good location, improving connection infrastructure (skywalk), reasonable maintenance, safety steps being taken. But it is under a lot of load, which causes crowding, operational vulnerabilities, and some gaps in accessibility and infrastructure. If these areas are improved, Kalighat could provide a much smoother and more comfortable experience even during festival peaks.
